 1420 - Jews are expelled from Austria and Syria.

 1592 - Giordano Bruno is arrested in Vienna.  Because he believed that the earth revolves around the sun, not the sun revolves around the earth.  His belief was considered anti-religion.

 1706 - John Churchill (Prince of Marlborough) defeats France, killing 17,000 people.

 1707 – Volcanic eruption begins in the Santorini caldera.

 1805 - Governor-General Lord Wellesley arranged a permanent provision for the Mughal emperor of Delhi under an order.

 1879 – Russian author Ivan Turgenef is awarded a doctorate in civil law by the University of Oxford.  He was the first writer in the world to be given this honor.

 1904 – The first Wrestling World Championship was held in Vienna.

 1915 - Italy declared war against Austria, Hungary and Germany at the time of the First World War.

 1928 - The first expedition to reach the North Pole was started in a Japlin plane named 'Italia'.
