The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system comprising the Sun and the objects that orbit it, either directly or indirectly. The system is made up of eight planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and other celestial bodies.

At the center of the Solar System is the Sun, which accounts for more than 99% of the total mass of the system. The Sun is a massive ball of hot plasma that generates energy through nuclear fusion, producing light and heat that radiate throughout the Solar System.

The eight planets in the Solar System orbit the Sun in elliptical orbits, with Mercury being the closest planet to the Sun and Neptune being the farthest. The planets differ in size, composition, and atmospheric conditions, with some having solid surfaces while others are composed mainly of gas.

The inner planets, also known as the terrestrial planets, are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are small, rocky, and have relatively short orbital periods. They have solid surfaces and are closest to the Sun.

The outer planets, also known as the gas giants, are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are much larger than the inner planets and have longer orbital periods. They are mostly composed of gas, with thick atmospheres and no solid surfaces.

The dwarf planets in the Solar System include Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. They are smaller than the eight planets and have not cleared their orbits of other debris, making them distinct from regular planets.

Moons, also known as natural satellites, orbit the planets and dwarf planets. The largest moon in the Solar System is Jupiter's Ganymede, which is larger than the planet Mercury.

Asteroids and comets are small celestial bodies that orbit the Sun. Asteroids are made up of rock and metal, while comets are made up of ice and dust. Both can collide with planets or other celestial bodies, and some have been known to cause catastrophic events in the past.

Overall, the Solar System is a complex and dynamic system that is constantly evolving. Its workings are driven by the gravitational forces between the Sun, planets, moons, and other celestial bodies, as well as the ongoing processes that shape the planets and their environments.
